Portara is the huge marble gate of a Ekatompedou temple started to be built in the 6th example century, probably in honor of Apollo on the island of Naxos. Stands majestic islet “palaces” or island of Bacchus is said otherwise in the left side of the port of Naxos. According to mythology, this island Theseus abandoned Ariadne and from here the kidnapped Dionysos with his retinue. The island until 1919 was not linked to Naxos years which built the stem that connects it to the rest of the island.
The construction of the temple started tyrant Lygdamis who aspired to create a temple similar to the temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens. The church was founded around 530 BC as a very ambitious construction but ultimately will not be completed.
